Dock Levellers Manchester

Treat the loading bay as one working system. We help Manchester warehouse teams plan dock leveller repairs, maintenance and replacements alongside the doors and vehicle movements around them.

Bridge The Gap With The Right Equipment

A dock leveller provides a traffic path between a loading platform and a suitable goods vehicle. It deals with differences in height and the changing position of the vehicle during loading. The equipment must be selected around the actual vehicles, loads and handling methods used at your site.

The leveller, door, buffers and vehicle controls all interact. A sound platform cannot compensate for an unsafe vehicle approach or an unclear departure procedure. Our enquiry process starts with the complete loading operation so the equipment issue can be assessed in context.

Tell us whether you need a new leveller, a replacement for an existing pit or investigation of a fault. Include the available manufacturer details, the type of vehicles served and any restrictions on bay closures. Photographs can help where they can be taken without entering a live loading area.

Signs A Loading Bay Needs Attention

Report hydraulic leaks, irregular movement, damaged hinges, distorted lips and a platform that will not stow correctly. Damage to buffers or the surrounding concrete may also affect the bay. Changes in vehicle type can make a previously suitable arrangement difficult to use even where the leveller itself still moves.

Stop using defective equipment and apply the site isolation procedure. Keep people away from exposed edges and do not enter beneath an unsupported platform. Inspection or maintenance below the deck needs the manufacturer’s support arrangement and a controlled system of work.

Assess The Whole Loading Sequence

The assessment should identify the vehicle range, approach alignment, platform levels and handling equipment. Rated capacity needs to be suitable for the application, including the way loads pass across the deck. Discuss any unusual wheel arrangements or concentrated loads rather than assuming all forklift movements are equivalent.

Check the usable vehicle bed, tail lift arrangement and the working range of the leveller together. A lip must engage correctly with the vehicle during use. Where the existing pit is retained, the replacement design needs to match its dimensions and structural condition.

HSE’s loading area guidance highlights trapping, falls and excessive gradients. Pedestrian separation, vehicle restraint and communication need consideration alongside the equipment. Confirm who controls the loading sequence and who gives permission for the vehicle to leave.

Standards And Equipment Duties

BS EN 1398 covers safety requirements for dock levellers, including design, installation, maintenance and testing. It is distinct from the standards for the loading bay door. A quotation for a complete bay should identify the equipment being assessed and the responsibility for each part.

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, known as PUWER, are relevant to dock levellers used at work. Equipment needs suitable maintenance and appropriate inspection. Do not assume a dock leveller is automatically subject to the same examination regime as a lifting platform, because the function of the equipment matters.

Repair, Replacement And Handover

A repair assessment can consider the deck, lip, hinges, hydraulic components, controls and supporting structure. The decision to repair depends on the extent of damage, available components and whether the whole assembly can operate safely. Structural deterioration may require a wider solution than replacement of a hydraulic part.

For replacement work, agree the bay closure, removal method and any pit repairs before installation. Commissioning should check the operating sequence and relevant safety functions. Keep the equipment instructions, work record and user guidance with the loading bay documents.

What Affects Dock Leveller Cost

Cost depends on platform dimensions, capacity, lip arrangement, drive system and the condition of the pit. Removal, drainage problems, concrete repairs and access equipment can change the scope. Interlocks, restraints and control upgrades should be listed so that different proposals can be compared fairly.

For a busy distribution building, planned bay closures may be as important as the equipment price. Tell us about delivery windows and whether another bay can stay available. We can also discuss loading bay sectional doors and planned door maintenance as related requirements.

Your Questions Answered

Does A Dock Leveller Need A LOLER Examination?

A dock leveller is not automatically covered by LOLER simply because its deck changes height. The equipment’s purpose and use determine the applicable duties, and PUWER remains relevant. Ask a competent assessor to confirm the inspection arrangements for your specific equipment, especially where a system also includes lifting tables or other lifting machinery.

Can A Dock Leveller Be Replaced In Its Existing Pit?

A dock leveller can sometimes be replaced in its existing pit if the dimensions and structure are suitable. The survey should check the concrete, fixing positions, drainage and required working range. A replacement proposal also needs to account for the vehicles and handling equipment used today, rather than copying the original specification without review.
